Wow, I am lucky

Wow, I am lucky

I just got a message from a friend from high school who was diagnosed shortly after I was.  He went through the same treatment as myself.  While I recovered fairly quickly and gained control again, he had a different outcome.  He has had numerous surgeries to connect the urethra to the bladder.  All have failed for one reason or another.  Now he is facing another surgery where they remove a portion of the bladder and insert a tube and a stoma to pass urine.  I cannot even begin to imagine what he is going through!

Cancer is a bitch and throws so many emotions depending on your history.  Almost everyone has been touched by cancer at some point.  Either a family member or close friend had cancer and faced the ultimate outcome of this terrible diagnosis.  Now it is you that has that diagnosis and the fears start from what you have already experienced through others.  It is your turn to face the consequences.  For many men, it is treated and called "cured" or in remission for years, probably until the end of their lives, but not from prostate cancer.  For me, it was a mind bender.  All the changes in life were completely unexpected, but that is what life is, right?

This news just grounded me again.  CANCER SUCKS!
